In 1802, the banjo wall clock was patented by Simon Willard. He called it his "Improved Timepiece", but it was dubbed "banjo" because it resembled that instrument in shape. Originally these clocks were time only. Later other manufacturers produced these clocks. Some were time only and some would also strike the hour and half hour.
