Shelf clocks like this one are commonly called carriage clocks. They have a handle on the top to make portable from place to place.

Carriage clocks are still being produced today. Most modern carriage clocks have wooden cases. Many older carriage clocks have cases made from brass with glass on the front, back and sides.
